We decided to rotate the crop allocations for our plants to try and diversify the nutrients in the soil. For this reason, we have moved the lettuce to where the tomatoes, peppers, and basil previously were, and vice versa. We have also incorporated new plants into the mix such as peas, cucumbers, dill, radishes, shallots and onions.
In an attempt to protect our garden in a natural way, we are planting flowers which act as natural pest repellents. We read that chrysanthemums and marigolds are great for repelling ticks and ants, amongst other insects. For this reason, we have distributed the flowers between the two garden beds to maximize the protective benefits. We have also used companion planting to preserve the health of specific plants with pairings like tomatoes and basil, and cucumbers and dill.
We can't wait to get started and we will bring you along for the ride in the next few weeks!
